Police investigate attacks on video bloggers at AfD event in Fürstenwalde

AfD supporters held a German Unity Day gathering and march in Fürstenwalde with Björn Höcke attending. Police recorded reports of assaults by video bloggers and counter-complaints.

A gathering of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Fürstenwalde was accompanied by attacks on video bloggers, Brandenburg police said. Thuringian AfD politician Björn Höcke attended the event last Saturday. The celebration marked German Unity Day and was followed by a march through town.

Police estimated that around 1,500 people attended the AfD gathering and roughly 800 joined the march; a counter-demonstration drew about 500 people. Officers recorded reports of attacks involving two video bloggers, aged 23 and 24. Counter-complaints related to filming without consent were also filed.

Tagesspiegel reported the presence of neo-Nazi groups and statements expressing fantasies of murder, and said police faced criticism after the incidents. The available excerpt does not detail those statements. Police are investigating the complaints, which do not by themselves establish guilt. A banner reading “Unity and Justice and Freedom” above the red Brandenburg eagle stood at the festival site.

Tagesspiegel listed the article’s publication time as 17:01. Police statements gave estimates of attendance and described the complaints; further conclusions will depend on the investigation.
