Possible Brazil finance minister candidate rejects ‘one-man show’ model

Marcelo Kayath, a former Credit Suisse director touted for a possible finance post under Flávio Bolsonaro, told CNN Brasil the ministry needs a capable team and clear coordination.

Kayath said a finance minister should communicate clearly, bring technical expertise, build a results-focused team and negotiate with political forces. The minister’s role, he said, should be to coordinate specialists rather than dictate the country’s economic direction alone.

The phrase “Posto Ipiranga” refers to a slogan used by Jair Bolsonaro during his 2018 presidential campaign. When asked about economic policy, he told voters to ask his prospective economy minister, Paulo Guedes. Kayath said he was not criticizing Guedes, but the idea that one person should be treated as a lone genius who sets the national course.

Asked whether he would accept a post in a possible Flávio Bolsonaro administration, Kayath did not answer directly. He said it was not the time to discuss appointments.
