Putin and Berdimuhamedov discuss Russian-Turkmen ties at Avaza meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a bilateral meeting with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the Avaza National Tourist Zone. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said they discussed bilateral relations.

Putin arrived in Turkmenistan to attend a meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State. Peskov said the meeting with Berdimuhamedov took place after an official lunch during the summit.

The Kremlin spokesman said the leaders discussed current issues in Russian-Turkmen relations, which he described as developing dynamically. The announcement did not give details of the talks or identify any specific agreements.

The presidents held a telephone conversation the previous day, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry said. Berdimuhamedov congratulated Putin on his birthday and said their in-person meeting in Avaza would allow them to discuss important bilateral issues.

The meeting took place at Avaza on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea. A festival of national foods from CIS countries was also held there as part of the summit.
