Senators elected in northern Brazil top ranking for campaign spending per vote

The first eight places in a ranking of campaign spending per vote went to senators elected in Brazil’s northern states. CNN Brasil calculated the figures from campaign expenses reported to election authorities by Oct. 7, and they may change after final disclosures.

Nicoletti (PL-RR) had the highest reported spending per vote at 20.43 reais. He received 138,269 votes and declared campaign expenses of 2,825,494 reais. The ranking also includes Teresa Surita (MDB-RR) at 11.71 reais per vote, Rayssa Furlan (Podemos-AP) at 9.43 and Alexandre Guimarães (MDB-TO) at 9.42.

Next were Lucas Barreto (PSD-AP) at 8.90 reais, Bruno Scheid (PL-RO) at 7.28, Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO) at 6.97 and Delegado Alessandro (MDB-SE) at 6.92. Mara Rocha (Republicanos-AC), at 6.43, and Samanda de Lula (PT-RN), at 5.96, completed the top ten. Eight of the ten senators are from Brazil’s North region.

The figure divides declared campaign spending by the number of votes received. It is not a measure of the cost of each individual vote. The totals are preliminary. CNN Brasil said candidates have until Nov. 3 to file final accounts, so declared expenses may increase.

Helder Barbalho (MDB-PA) had the lowest figure among the elected senators. He received 2,342,070 votes and declared expenses of 395,117 reais, or about 0.17 reais per vote.
