Sony has reportedly approved a new Ape Escape game from independent studio Evening Star, according to games journalist Jeff Gerstmann and sources cited by Video Games Chronicle. Sony has not announced the project, which is said to be far from release.
Gerstmann discussed the project on The Jeff Gerstmann Show podcast. He said he first heard about it at the D.I.C.E. Summit in February, when it had only just received preliminary approval. VGC said its own sources had confirmed Evening Star’s involvement.
The studio was founded by members of the Sonic Mania development team. Its only released game so far is the 3D platformer Penny’s Big Breakaway, which came out in 2024. Sony has not announced the project’s title, platforms, release timing or format.
The main Ape Escape trilogy appeared on PlayStation and PlayStation 2 between 1999 and 2005. Players used a range of gadgets to catch monkeys trying to take over the world. For now, reports of the series’ possible return remain unconfirmed.
