Kerala rights panel seeks permanent fix for damaged Kochi bridge approach

The State Human Rights Commission accepted the city corporation’s report on interim safety work and directed authorities to find a permanent solution.

Alexander Thomas, chairperson of Kerala’s State Human Rights Commission, has directed authorities to find a permanent solution to damage on the approach road and side railings of a bridge over the Thevara–Perandoor Canal near Kadavanthra metro station in Kochi. The Commission took suo motu cognisance of media reports about the damage.

The Kochi Corporation secretary said fencing made of galvanised iron and pipes had been installed under an interim order issued by the Commission on March 3. The Commission accepted the Corporation’s report on the measures.

The Corporation submitted an estimate of ₹11.42 crore for approval to renovate the stretch between Vyttila Junction and Manorama Junction along Sahodaran Ayyappan Road. The proposed work would use Bituminous Macadam and Bituminous Concrete to improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents.

A separate estimate of ₹10 lakh has been submitted for approval to repair the damaged bridge railings. The Commission said it had accepted the report.
