Romania scrambles Spanish F-18s after targets detected near border

An air alert in Tulcea County lasted about an hour. The targets remained in Ukrainian airspace.

Romania’s Defence Ministry radar system detected two aerial targets over Ukraine near the river border on the night of Oct. 5-6. Two Spanish F-18 fighters on enhanced air-policing duty then took off from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base.

An air alert was issued in Tulcea County. Romania’s ministry said it remained in effect for about an hour and that the targets did not enter Romanian airspace. The aircraft belong to Spain’s Air and Space Force and are stationed at the Romanian base.

RIA Novosti reported the incident, citing Romania’s Defence Ministry. The ministry confirmed the radar detection and fighter scramble but did not identify the targets’ type.
