Russia is ready to offer mediation to the parties in Yemen’s conflict if they are interested, a Russian deputy foreign minister told RIA Novosti.

The statement came amid an escalation in fighting. The Associated Press reported that Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces launched an offensive against the Houthis near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Oct. 5. RIA’s report did not specify a possible mediation format or which parties the offer was directed to.
