Russian fur and leather exports rise 59% in seven months

Exports of leather raw materials, furs and related products rose 59.1% year on year in January–July 2026. Export revenue remained modest, at about $2 million.

Russian exports of leather raw materials, furs and related products rose 59.1% in January–July 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier. Imports in the category increased 20.1%, Lenta.ru reported, citing Rosstat data covered by Kommersant.

In monetary terms, imports were about $8 million and exports about $2 million. Kommersant also reported a shortage in Russia of capacity for high-quality tanning, dyeing and production of fur and leather goods, leaving companies reliant on imported raw materials and finished products.

Experts cited in the reports listed the return of demand for natural fur as one possible factor behind the increase. Anna Lebsak-Kleymans, head of Fashion Consulting Group, also pointed to higher raw-material prices in spring 2026.

According to figures cited by Lenta.ru, the average auction price of a wild sable pelt reached about $340 in March, compared with $135 a year earlier, before falling to $240 by September. Separately, reports said the European Union removed Russian sable-skin imports from sanctions restrictions in July after requests from Italy and Greece.
