Russian government backs bill allowing ad disclosures through links

Russia’s government has backed a bill that would let advertisers provide some mandatory information about goods and services through a website link. Izvestia reported the support, citing an official government review dated Oct. 8.

Under the proposal, a linked website could list the seller and the terms of promotions, contests, games and betting offers instead of placing detailed disclosures in the advertisement itself.

State Duma lawmaker Anton Nemkin, one of the bill’s authors, said the proposal changes how information is provided, not the amount of information required. He said the goal is to make consumer disclosures more effective.

Izvestia said it had sent questions to the government and the Federal Antimonopoly Service about the reasons for supporting the bill. The proposal has not yet changed the rules in force.
