Russian public chamber member proposes shorter lessons in cold classrooms

Vladislav Grib, deputy secretary of Russia’s Public Chamber, has proposed shortening lessons for younger pupils when classroom temperatures fall below 19°C and cancelling them below 18°C. For middle- and high-school students, he said lessons should be shortened if rooms are below 20°C.

Grib’s proposal comes as heating season has begun in several Russian regions. Heat is supplied first to kindergartens, schools and hospitals, followed in stages by residential buildings, offices, retail sites and industrial facilities.

The thresholds he described differ by age group. For primary grades, a school day would be shortened below 19°C and classes suspended below 18°C. For middle and senior grades, lessons would be shortened below 20°C. The remarks describe a proposal, not a nationwide rule already in force.
