Sam Wood remains in custody after bail is denied

Australian fitness entrepreneur Sam Wood is being held at Brisbane Correctional Centre after a court refused him bail on domestic violence charges. He denies strangling or harming his wife.

Wood, known for the Australian reality show The Bachelor, was transferred from a police watch house in Maroochydore to Brisbane Correctional Centre in Wacol. ABC News and The Sydney Morning Herald reported that a court denied bail after a hearing on October 8. He arrived at the prison at about 9pm.

Prosecutors outlined allegations that Wood assaulted his wife, Snezana, during an argument at holiday accommodation in Noosa. She told police she feared for her life. Acting magistrate Janelle Boegheim said the prosecution alleged Wood held his wife by the throat and restricted her breathing. Prosecutors also alleged that he threw her into a wall twice. These remain allegations made by the prosecution.

Wood’s lawyer said his client denied strangling or harming his wife. Barrister Mathew Cuskelly said a further bail application to the Supreme Court would depend on his client’s instructions. The magistrate found that releasing Wood would pose an unacceptable risk. No further bail application has yet been confirmed.

The claims presented in court have not been established as fact. The case is before the courts in Queensland. After appearing on The Bachelor, Wood built the online fitness business 28 by Sam Wood, which was sold to billionaire Dennis Bastas for $71 million in 2022.
