Second prison officer dies after attack on convoy train in Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria

A Federal Penitentiary Service officer has died in hospital after an inmate attacked a prison escort aboard a Vladikavkaz–Adler train. The service confirmed the death; another officer was killed at the scene.

An officer of Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) who was wounded in an attack on an escort aboard a train in Kabardino-Balkaria has died in hospital, the agency said on Oct. 7. Interfax also reported the death.

The attack took place on Oct. 2 while prisoners were being transferred on the Vladikavkaz–Adler train, according to FSIN. One inmate seized a firearm and shot at the escort officers. One officer died at the scene and three were wounded; the attacker was killed by return fire.

The hospital death brings the number of officers killed to two. FSIN said it would assist the families. Interfax reported that investigators opened criminal cases relating to the attack on officers, theft of a firearm and an assault on a law enforcement officer.
