Sergipe police sergeant to be removed from street duty after shots near student rally

The officer’s weapon was seized and a Civil Police inquiry opened; he has been identified as a suspect.

Military Police Sergeant Manoel Messias dos Santos will be removed from street duties after a shooting incident near a student demonstration in support of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sergipe state. CNN Brasil reported that the officer’s weapon had been seized and the Civil Police would open an inquiry. The Military Police internal affairs office was also asked to consider administrative measures.

The shots were reported on the evening of October 8 near the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) campus, where students had gathered. The university said it did not organise or promote the demonstration, which took place on a public road outside campus. UFS said it was in contact with public security authorities and ready to assist the investigation.

The State Secretariat for Public Security sent the weapon for forensic testing for gunshot residue. Investigators are also collecting camera footage. CNN Brasil had earlier reported that authorities had not confirmed shots or injuries. In its later report, the outlet identified the officer citing the SSP, while the inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances and the role of each person involved. The article did not include a response from the officer’s defence.
