A court in Randburg postponed the bail application of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. Proceedings included testimony from his wife about a conversation with a man identified in court as Mr M.

The court heard that Mr M contacted Sibiya’s wife, Sizakele Dlamini, and said he was unhappy with how Sibiya was portraying him in court. Dlamini filed an affidavit in support of her husband’s bail application. Defence lawyer Lindiwe Makhoba read the affidavit, in which Dlamini said no member of her family had asked Bishop Maumela to contact Mr M and that he had contacted her first.

Dlamini said that at about 11 p.m. on the evening of the 24th, while she was taking a shower, she received a call but did not answer. When she returned the call, she realized she was speaking to Mr Evans. She said he wanted to explain why he had brought the charges and felt he owed her an explanation. He also confirmed that he had contacted the apostle because he wanted to meet with the family.

Sibiya is suspended from his post as deputy national police commissioner for crime detection. He faces charges including the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl, rape, human trafficking and contravening the Firearms Control Act. The bail proceedings are due to resume next Tuesday.
