Indian Railways is assessing a proposed 34-kilometre railway link from Rangpo to Gangtok, estimated to cost about ₹9,000 crore, the Times of India reported. The proposal was taken up by the Integrated Multimodal Network Planning Group under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. The report does not say that construction has received final approval.
The proposed line would bring Sikkim’s capital onto the rail network. Its first stage is the 44.96-kilometre Sevoke–Rangpo route from West Bengal into Sikkim. The Press Information Bureau reported in September that work was about 80% complete and the target remained December 2027. The project includes 14 tunnels, 23 bridges and five stations, including an underground station at Teesta Bazar.
Construction crosses difficult Himalayan terrain. Once operational, the line is expected to provide Sikkim with its first railway connection and support passenger and freight travel. The Gangtok extension remains a separate proposal with no reported completion date. Its implementation depends on progress and commissioning of Sevoke–Rangpo.
