Spanish unemployment benefit payments vary by bank this month

Most Spanish banks expect to transfer unemployment benefits around October 10, but the general payment reference shifts because of a weekend and a public holiday. SEPE’s usual rule points to the next working day, while banks may pay earlier.

Unemployment benefit payments in Spain for October may arrive on different days depending on the bank. The State Public Employment Service, SEPE, pays benefits monthly, while some banks credit the money before the standard date. This year October 10 falls on a Saturday, followed by the national holiday on Monday, October 12. Under the general rule, a payment date falling on a non-working day moves to the next working day, October 13.

ABC listed estimated dates for several banks: Bankinter on October 9, Santander on October 5, and CaixaBank, BBVA, Sabadell, Ibercaja, ING, Unicaja, Abanca, Cajamar and Cajasur from October 10. Openbank was listed for October 3 to 5. Some of the earlier dates had already passed by publication time. Bank schedules are estimates and may differ from the actual credit date.

SEPE pays benefits for the preceding month. The agency transfers the payment to the account provided by the beneficiary. If the money has not arrived, ABC advises recipients to check their case status on SEPE’s electronic portal, verify the IBAN and make sure their jobseeker registration has been renewed. If no explanation is available, they can contact SEPE at 060 or request an appointment at a local office.

The ABC report also cited September unemployment figures. The number of people registered as unemployed rose by 23,587 from August, or 1%. Unemployment increased by 6,707 in services and 601 in agriculture. It fell by 1,726 in construction and rose by 39 in industry.
