Students demonstrated at the University of Buenos Aires law school amid controversy over the Rural Lands Law.
Students staged a protest during the Quorum awards ceremony at the University of Buenos Aires law school, targeting Supreme Court President Horacio Rosatti and Judge Julián Ercolini. They called for former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s release and opposed the court’s ruling on the Rural Lands Law. La Nación reported that leaflets reading “Cristina Free” were thrown in the auditorium and a banner read, “The land is not for sale, but the Court is.”
Videos circulating online showed demonstrators chanting “The homeland is not for sale” as organisers called for order. The university action took place on the same day as a separate rally outside the Supreme Court in central Buenos Aires. Participants included Peronist and left-wing groups, unions and social organisations. Lavalle Square was not filled, but stages and demonstrators forced the closure of Talcahuano Street between Tucumán and Lavalle.
The protests followed a September 30 Supreme Court decision that left in place the repeal of restrictions on foreign purchases of rural land. The court overturned a lower-court ruling in a case brought by the Centre of Former Malvinas Combatants (CECIM), finding that the group lacked standing to bring the challenge. The court did not rule on the constitutionality of Article 154 of decree 70/2023, which repealed the Rural Lands Law.
La Nación reported that protesters criticised both the ruling and its implications for limits on foreign ownership of land.
