Toyota Tsusho plans hybrid vehicle production in Bangladesh

Company representatives told Prime Minister Tarique Rahman they aim to begin developing a facility in an economic zone in 2027, with full-scale production targeted by 2029.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met a delegation from Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation, led by the company’s vice chairman, Ichiro Kashitani. The sides discussed plans for vehicle production in Bangladesh and the expansion of Toyota’s presence, Prothom Alo reported, citing the prime minister’s press office.

Company representatives described plans to establish a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) manufacturing operation in an economic zone. Work on the project is expected to begin in 2027, with full-scale production targeted for 2029. The report gives the project’s guiding phrase as “With Bangladesh, for Bangladesh.” The dates are presented as company plans; the report does not say construction has begun or that the plant has a confirmed opening date.

The delegation said the project could create jobs, support industrial growth, transfer technology and help train skilled local workers. The talks also covered investment opportunities and Toyota Tsusho’s longer-term business plans in Bangladesh.

Rahman said the government was working to provide a stable, competitive and investment-friendly environment for domestic and foreign investors, according to Prothom Alo. He also offered government support for potential investment in waste-to-energy projects and renewable energy.

Toyota Bangladesh is separately planning to expand its distribution network to all administrative divisions, the report said. Technical and vocational training for young people and developing skills for future industries were also discussed.

Attendees included Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, government advisers and other officials. Toyota Tsusho’s Mobility Division chief executive Shigeru Harada and Toyota Bangladesh President Premit Singh were among the company representatives.
