Ahead of the first Test in Durban, Australia vice-captain Travis Head said criticism of the current batting lineup by former players was unfair, arguing that conditions and the game itself have changed.
Head spoke after Matthew Hayden had criticised selectors for recalling Nic Maddinson and called the current level “the greatest pile of mediocrity.” Without naming individual critics, Head said former players had been “putting a bullet through” the current generation. He said the team was strong enough to handle the commentary.
Head also referred to the strained period surrounding Justin Langer’s departure as coach in 2022. He stressed that current and former players represent the same team and continue to respect one another.
Test batting averages have fallen by nearly 20% since the end of the 2010s. Head pointed to changing conditions, saying pitches have become harder to bat on and matches often move faster. He noted that Cricket Australia had asked curators to prepare surfaces more favourable to batters.
Head confirmed that he would continue to open in the South Africa series, despite debate about his role. The first Test begins in Durban on Friday.
