On Oct. 7, Donald Trump said he is willing to set aside part of his West Palm Beach golf club as a retreat for future U.S. presidents. He said the Secret Service and military had supported the idea.
Trump told reporters at the White House that the Secret Service and military were already familiar with the club he visits regularly and considered it as secure as possible. He cited its proximity to the airport, about a 2-minute trip, and the absence of nearby high-rise buildings as advantages.
The Washington Post reported that representatives of the golf club had submitted a proposal to Palm Beach County officials to designate part of the property for a permanent federal retreat. The county is reviewing the idea and has requested more information. Under the proposal, the club would remain privately operated while the federal parcel would have a separate entrance. Trump said future presidents could use the site.
U.S. presidents already have a retreat at Camp David. The Washington Post reported that Trump visits it less often than many of his predecessors and prefers to spend weekends and holidays at properties he owns. The Associated Press also reported that Trump cited the fact that, in his view, all presidents play golf.
