A small aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Petaluma Municipal Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration said two people were aboard.
The Van’s RV-7A went down in a field near East Washington Street at about 10:45 a.m. local time, KTVU reported, citing an FAA spokesman. Petaluma police asked drivers to avoid East Washington Street between Garfield Drive and Adobe Road.
Both people on board died. The crash sparked a fire that emergency crews later extinguished. Local and federal authorities are investigating the cause.
The FAA spokesman confirmed the aircraft type and the number of people aboard. Authorities had not released further details about the victims or the flight.
