Corinthians sack Fernando Diniz after seventh straight league defeat

A 2-1 loss to Internacional left Corinthians 16th in Brazil’s top flight, one point above the relegation zone.

The club confirmed the coach’s dismissal on Wednesday, Oct. 7, after the teams met in the 29th round. Corinthians have 32 points, while Internacional, the first team in the relegation places, have 31.

The run included home defeats by Cruzeiro, Santos, Chapecoense and Fluminense, along with away losses to Flamengo, Coritiba and Internacional. It was Corinthians’ seventh consecutive defeat in Brazil’s Serie A.

Diniz leaves after the club’s exits from the Brazilian Cup and Copa Libertadores. Corinthians beat Internacional 2-1 in the second leg of their Brazilian Cup tie but lost 3-2 on aggregate. In the Libertadores, they drew 1-1 with Estudiantes in Argentina before losing 1-0 at home. Memphis Depay missed a penalty in the second match.
