British counter-terrorism police are investigating after two Latvian men were arrested at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire. Police said they have found no link so far to a separate suspected plot involving RAF Fairford.
Police said the men, aged 32 and 36, were arrested inside the base after a Ministry of Defence patrol found an abandoned vehicle and a small breach in the perimeter fence. They were first held on suspicion of trespassing at a prohibited site and criminal damage. They were later re-arrested on suspicion of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK under the National Security Act 2023.
Officers are carrying out searches at two addresses in the Peterborough area. Bomb disposal officers examined the abandoned vehicle and found nothing of concern, police said.
Authorities are separately investigating a suspected plot to attack RAF Fairford in western England, where U.S. forces have used aircraft for missions against Iran. The British government linked that suspected plot to Iran, which has denied involvement. A counter-terrorism police official said there was currently no evidence connecting the Molesworth arrests to the Fairford case.
