Telangana chief minister condemns detention of Rahul Gandhi

A. Revanth Reddy called the police action an expression of the “hubris of a failing government” after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other lawmakers were detained during an opposition march to the Election Commission.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy condemned the detention of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other INDIA bloc lawmakers after an opposition march to the Election Commission in New Delhi on October 6. The Hindu and the Times of India reported that Reddy described the police action and the government’s response as evidence of the “hubris of a failing government.”

Reddy said he believed the government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party feared Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and his campaign to defend the Constitution and voting rights. He compared the detentions with arrests of Indian leaders by British authorities during the independence movement.

The opposition march was directed towards the Election Commission’s office amid a dispute over the revision of electoral rolls. The Times of India reported that Reddy said the Congress would continue its campaign and seek the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Reddy’s remarks are a political assessment of the detentions and the opposition’s demands. The Election Commission and India’s central government did not respond to his statements in the cited reports.
