V’landys backs Perth Bears coaches after CEO's departure

Peter V’landys said on October 10 that he is confident Mal Meninga and Ben Gardiner will work well together at Perth Bears, despite reports of friction and CEO Anthony De Ceglie's departure.
The Australian Rugby League Commission chairman said at the World Cup launch at Moore Park that he had spoken to the head coach and his assistant. Both considered the reported tension exaggerated and said they were getting along, according to V’landys.
Perth Bears will become the NRL's 18th team in 2027, with their first pre-season starting in November. De Ceglie left on Friday evening, less than 18 months after his appointment in May 2025.
The Sydney Morning Herald linked his resignation to a loss of board support. ABC confirmed the departure and noted that the club had not given a reason.
General manager of football Gareth Holmes will temporarily assume the CEO's responsibilities. V’landys said the Perth board would choose a permanent replacement without the commission intervening in staffing decisions.
De Ceglie's departure followed the resignation of the first general manager of football, David Sharpe, in April. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the board had also brought in an expert to improve organisational culture.
V’landys believes players with Melbourne Storm and Penrith experience will help establish the club's foundations. He expressed confidence in Meninga, a former Australia and Queensland coach.
