BSW leader Sahra Wagenknecht tied her call for Chancellor Friedrich Merz to step down to his Ukraine visit and pledge of aid to Kyiv.
Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of Germany’s Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to resign after his visit to Ukraine and pledge of billions in aid to Kyiv, RIA Novosti reports, citing her post on X.
Wagenknecht argued that Germany had to economise on pensions, elder care and healthcare while support for Ukraine remained effectively unlimited. She described Merz as the country’s most unpopular chancellor and said only about one in 10 Germans approved of his work. The RIA report does not identify a source for that figure.
She called for an end to the use of German taxpayers’ money for Kyiv and urged the government to reduce the burden on people in Germany. RIA also includes Moscow’s position on Western military assistance, separate from Wagenknecht’s remarks.
