Akanji hopes Manchester City will not lose titles after Premier League ruling

The former City defender said he was learning about the case through news reports and knew no more than other players. An independent commission found the club guilty on 114 of 115 charges, while sanctions are still pending.

“I still speak to several players, but I don’t know any more than you do. We were told to stay calm and that the club had everything under control,” Manuel Akanji said, according to Sport-Express, citing the Swiss outlet Neu. He added that he trusted the people responsible for the club and would be disappointed if Manchester City’s titles were taken away.

On Sept. 29, the Premier League said an independent commission had found City guilty on all counts involving serious breaches of its financial rules and on most counts related to a failure to cooperate with the investigation. The case covers 114 of the 115 charges brought against the club, spanning the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons.

City rejected the commission’s findings and said it intended to appeal. The Associated Press reported that the club lodged an appeal on Oct. 2. The Premier League has not yet set out any sanctions.
