Argentina approves digital signatures for popular legislative initiatives

Argentina’s National Electoral Chamber has approved an online tool for gathering electronic signatures in support of popular legislative initiatives. It is designed to supplement paper signatures and verify signers’ identities and the integrity of documents.

The chamber said the technology had passed a pilot test authorized in May 2026. The trial showed that a signer’s identity could be securely linked to the signed document and that signatures could be authenticated while personal data remained protected. The electoral court will operate and maintain the system through its office responsible for electoral information systems.

Promoters will have to request authorization before using the platform. The digital process is intended to complement, not replace, paper signature collection. The National Electoral Chamber’s website has also described approval for electronic signatures under the popular legislative initiative law.

Law No. 24,747 requires a popular initiative to receive signatures from at least 1.5% of voters registered for the most recent national deputies election, with signers representing at least six electoral districts. The national electoral judiciary must verify the signatures within 20 days.

The ruling was signed by judges Alberto Ricardo Dalla Via, Santiago Hernán Corcuera and Daniel Bejas. The chamber said the digital tool is intended to make civic participation easier while preserving the legal safeguards for authenticating signatures.
