Brazil sets Dec. 9 auction for three port terminals

The government will auction the MUC04 container terminal in Fortaleza and two facilities for fertilizer handling. The round also includes projects at the ports of Salvador and Itaqui.

Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts cleared MUC04 to proceed to the auction stage in September. The terminal in Ceará is viewed as important for cargo movement in the country’s Northeast. CNN Brasil reported that the auction is set for Dec. 9.

Two fertilizer terminals will also be offered that day. SSD-A3, at the Port of Salvador, is planned as a simplified lease with a 10-year term and investment of 6.4 million reais.

The second site, IQI16, is at the Port of Itaqui in Maranhão. It is also designated for fertilizer handling and carries planned investment of 147 million reais.

The auction comes as Brazil weighs whether port infrastructure can keep up with growing container traffic. Recent studies have pointed to pressure on capacity at some of the country’s largest port complexes.
