Rio de Janeiro gubernatorial candidate Douglas Ruas said the dispute over the annulled votes of Anthony Garotinho should be settled at the ballot box. A recount is scheduled for October 10.
After the Superior Electoral Court annulled Garotinho’s votes, Eduardo Paes appealed to the Supreme Federal Court. Speaking after the hearing, Ruas called it regrettable to take a political dispute to court and said the electoral ruling was clear.
Ruas said institutions had faced attacks in recent days and that he had received support from parties outside his campaign coalition. He said Paes’s coalition initiated the case over Garotinho’s candidacy and that his own alliance is not involved in the lawsuit.
The candidate said continued litigation leaves uncertainty over the state government unresolved. He added that residents want calm and that his team could already be preparing its planned changes. Ruas said he was waiting for the recount and hoped the electoral court’s ruling would be upheld.
