Australian MP Helen Haines loses leg after being struck by car
Australian MP Helen Haines has lost a leg after being struck by a car outside her electorate office, ABC reported. She remains in critical condition following surgery.
Police said a Toyota Land Cruiser struck Haines, 65, in Victoria on Monday. Pinned between vehicles, she was later airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as apparently deliberate. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the vehicle hit her twice.
A bystander held the driver until police arrived. Officers arrested the 43-year-old man and took him to a police station for questioning.
