Moldova detains Ukrainian border guards near Vasilcau

Moldovan border police reported detaining two Ukrainian border guards near Vasilcau. Criminal proceedings have been opened over suspected illegal border crossing.

The detention took place on October 17 at about 14.00. Preliminary information indicates the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service officers were trying to detain a Ukrainian citizen on the Dniester near the Moldovan bank.

The guards were taken to the border police unit in Soroca. The proceedings fall under Article 362 of Moldova's Criminal Code.

The Ukrainian citizen they pursued has requested asylum in Moldova. His application will be considered under the procedures established by law.
