Bangladesh says it has begun clearing teachers’ retirement benefit arrears

Bangladesh has arranged 20 billion taka to begin paying overdue retirement benefits and allowances to teachers, Mahdi Amin, an adviser to the prime minister on education, said at a teachers’ rally in Dhaka.

Amin spoke on Thursday, October 8, at a rally organized by the Teachers-Employees Unity Alliance at the Engineers Institution auditorium in the capital’s Ramna district. He said the government would support teachers’ reasonable demands while taking the country’s financial capacity into account. He added that their interests would remain a priority.

The adviser said the government had increased the number of teachers honored for World Teachers’ Day from 12 to more than 100. He said it planned to expand the recognition further and give special consideration to teachers who had inspired students and faced attacks and legal cases under the previous government.

Amin also announced a “One Teacher, One Tablet” program. He said the government planned to expand teacher training, opportunities for higher education and research, international teacher exchanges and links between industry and academia. He called for reforms across primary, secondary and madrasa education, describing teachers as a major force in national development.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, an adviser to the prime minister and acting secretary-general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, attended the rally. Selim Bhuiyan, head of the Teachers-Employees Unity Alliance, chaired the event.
