A court in Dhaka sentenced three men to death for robbing and killing Saymon, a 17-year-old garment worker. Judge Zahidul Islam of the 13th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
Mohammad Yusuf, Iqbal Khan and Mehedi Hasan received death sentences. A fourth defendant, Sujan, was sentenced to three years in prison for possessing the stolen phone. The court also imposed a fine of 20,000 taka on each defendant. Sujan is absconding, local reports said.
Saymon was killed in October 2022 at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial in Mirpur. Court documents cited by local media said he was returning home with two colleagues after collecting his wages when three men took him and one colleague away by rickshaw. Saymon was later stabbed and robbed of his money and phone.
Eighteen witnesses testified during the trial. Prosecutors filed charges in January 2023, and the trial began in August that year. A court official confirmed the verdict to local media.
