German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed holding a meeting of Coalition of the Willing leaders in Berlin before the end of the year to support Ukraine. The summit could take place in December, German broadcaster N-TV reported, citing government circles.
Merz discussed the plan during an unannounced visit to Kyiv on October 4. He said then that he wanted the coalition to meet in Berlin in winter.
Reuters reported the same day that the chancellor had pledged €1 billion in military support for Kyiv and a further €350 million for Ukraine’s energy sector.
Launched in 2025 at the initiative of Britain and France, the informal coalition brings together more than 30 countries, mostly in Europe. Multinational forces to support Ukraine were established within the framework, with command staff structures rotating between France and Britain.
