BJP regains Nagaon parliamentary seat in Assam

Devasish Sharma won the by-election, while the Congress candidate finished third.
BJP candidate Devasish Sharma won the parliamentary by-election in Nagaon, Assam. Voting took place on October 6, with results announced on October 9. The party regained a seat held by Congress since 2019.
Sharma received 714,349 votes (49.12%), according to the Election Commission of India. His nearest rival, Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front, received 572,125 votes, leaving a margin of 142,224. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora finished third with 129,492 votes.
The vacancy arose when Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from parliament ahead of the 2026 state assembly election and joined BJP. He had won Nagaon for Congress in 2019 and 2024 before becoming a BJP legislator representing Dispur.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the victory as support for BJP's development policies and said the party had attracted a substantial share of religious minority votes. That is his political assessment rather than a separate verified count of votes by religion.
State Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi questioned the election commission's role and called for an inquiry. The Hindu reported his allegations but did not cite investigative findings establishing wrongdoing. The Nagaon victory took BJP's parliamentary representation in Assam to 10 of the state's 14 seats.
