Madras High Court hears Vijay plea to dismiss challenge to his election

A voter alleges material discrepancies in the Tamil Nadu chief minister’s property affidavit. Vijay denies wrongdoing, and the claims remain before the court.

The Madras High Court is hearing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s plea to dismiss an election petition challenging his victory from the Perambur constituency. Petitioner S. Dinesh, a voter in the constituency, wants the election set aside, alleging deliberate omissions and misrepresentations in Vijay’s property affidavit. The allegations have not been established by the court.

The petitioner’s case concerns the status of 50 cents of agricultural land in Vilpatti, the area and purchase price of a plot in Porur, and the valuation and ownership history of a commercial building in Chennai’s Padi neighbourhood. He alleges that a building declared at ₹7 crore was sold for ₹35 crore in February 2026. He also disputes Vijay’s description of a bungalow in Neelangarai as inherited property.

Vijay has called the allegations baseless and said his affidavit was properly filed. His side argues that the petitioner has not shown how the disputed valuations affected the election result and that differences in the valuation of disclosed assets do not by themselves prove concealment. The chief minister also cited his 120,365 votes and 53,715-vote margin in Perambur.

The court has begun hearing Vijay’s request to dismiss the petition before a full trial. Senior counsel Gopal Sankaranarayanan argued for the chief minister over two days before the hearing was adjourned for the petitioner’s side. The Times of India also reported Vijay’s arguments against the case; the property allegations remain matters for the ongoing proceedings.
