Ronaldo remains the all‑time leading scorer in men’s international football with 146 goals in 233 appearances. He also became the first player to score at six World Cups during last summer’s tournament, a feat that underscored his longevity even as his performances attracted criticism.
Jorge Jesus, 72, took charge of the national team after replacing Roberto Martinez following Portugal’s last‑16 exit at the World Cup. Jesus previously coached Ronaldo at Al‑Nassr in Saudi Arabia, guiding the club to the Saudi Pro League title before departing in May.
The squad also sees the recall of Borussia Dortmund forward Fabio Silva, earning his first call‑up since his sole appearance in November 2024, and the return of Benfica midfielder João Palhinha, who re‑joins the national team after nearly a year out of selection.
Portugal have won the Nations League twice in its four editions and enter the campaign as defending champions after beating Spain on penalties in the 2025 final.
After the Wales opener, Portugal travel to Oslo to meet Norway on 27 September, then face Denmark away on 1 October, before concluding the group stage with a return fixture against Norway in Porto on 4 October.
