Rainfall intensified across parts of Bhadradri Kothagudem on Wednesday, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the district and schools under all managements remaining closed after forecasts warned of heavy to extremely heavy rain.
According to local sources, Aswaraopeta mandal, which borders Andhra Pradesh, recorded heavy rainfall in the preceding 24 hours, contributing to the district's mounting water concerns.
The Peddavagu reservoir at Gummadivalli in Aswaraopeta mandal received substantial inflows from upstream catchments, leading officials to lift three of its gates to release surplus water downstream and mitigate the risk of overtopping.
In response to the red alert and rising water levels, the district administration announced a holiday for all schools on Thursday, marking the second consecutive day of closures as a precautionary measure.
