Fisherman survives bear attack in Russia’s Primorye region

A 65-year-old man was attacked by a female bear while fishing in late September. After treatment in Arsenyev, he is due to be transferred to an eye department in Vladivostok on October 8.

The attack took place on September 27, when the man went fishing with a puppy in Chuguevsky District. According to the Primorye regional Health Ministry, the dog made him turn toward a noise behind him, when the bear charged. The encounter happened in the water.

The bear knocked the fisherman down, biting and scratching him. He lost consciousness, and the animal then moved away. After regaining consciousness, the man made his way home with deep wounds to his face, left arm and thigh.

A local medical assistant treated the wounds and called an ambulance. The fisherman was taken to Arsenyev City Hospital, where doctors found injuries to his eyelid and left eye. The hospital consulted remotely with Primorye Regional Clinical Hospital No. 2 to determine his treatment plan.

The regional Health Ministry said the man’s condition was satisfactory and that specialists were monitoring him. From October 8, his treatment is expected to continue in the eye department of the regional hospital in Vladivostok.
