French court annuls Poissy municipal election over misleading claims of political backing

An administrative court in Versailles annulled the municipal election in Poissy after finding that one candidate’s claims of political endorsements may have affected the first-round result. Mayor Sandrine Berno Dos Santos said she plans to appeal.

The court said the list “Mieux vivre Poissy, la gauche et l’écologie avec vous” received 1,271 votes, or 9.56%, falling 59 votes short of the 10% threshold required to advance to the runoff. Its candidate, Mathieu Paranthoën, challenged the result, arguing that actions by the “Poissy debout” list had harmed his campaign.

According to the court, Maxime Legrand’s list repeatedly claimed the backing of prominent politicians, although those figures and their movements denied endorsing it. The judges also found that voters could have been confused by claims of support from the Les Ecolos and Yvelines socialistes associations. The Socialist Party and the Ecologists officially backed Paranthoën’s list.

“Poissy debout” came sixth with 464 votes. The court said its leader’s actions could have altered the first-round result and influenced the election outcome. It also barred Legrand from standing for office for one year.

Mayor Sandrine Berno Dos Santos said she would appeal. The ruling concerns the election held on March 15 and 22.
