Seven senators urge reversal of Russian diesel import decision
Seven U.S. senators from both parties have opposed the decision to allow Russian diesel imports and urged President Donald Trump's administration to reverse it.
The October 11 statement was published by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Democrats Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal and Ron Wyden joined Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and John Curtis.
The senators argued that the decision conflicts with Congress's 2022 ban on Russian energy imports. They also alleged that the administration had neither conducted the required consultation with Congress nor submitted an explanation justifying its action.
Their statement expresses the lawmakers' legal assessment, rather than a court ruling. They called for an immediate reversal, arguing that purchases would provide Russia with financial support.
Trump announced the arrangement after speaking with Vladimir Putin on October 9. He said Russia would immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel to the U.S. and global markets.
