Weidel calls for pragmatic relations after Russian diesel agreement

Alternative für Deutschland co-leader Alice Weidel called for an end to escalation at the expense of Germany’s population and urged pragmatic relations. She was commenting on the agreement to supply Russian diesel to the United States.
Weidel praised Donald Trump’s approach while criticising Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In a social media message, she argued that sanctions and expensive liquefied natural gas were harming Germany. These were her political assessments.
Her appeal did not itself change German government policy. She urged the authorities to put the population’s interests ahead of escalation.
The comments followed Vladimir Putin and Trump’s October 9 telephone conversation and their announced agreement on Russian diesel supplies to world and US markets. In Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised the deal, taking the opposing view.
