Geologists see possible Kilauea eruption episode in coming days or weeks
Ground inflation has resumed at Kilauea’s summit in Hawaii after its latest eruption episode ended. The US Geological Survey considers renewed lava activity possible in the coming days or weeks.
Episode 55 ended on October 17. Ground deformation has continued since then, which scientists link to renewed pressure in the magma system.
The forecast remains preliminary because the volcano’s behavior before the latest episode departed from its previous pattern. The agency said there was currently no threat to communities or critical infrastructure.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Kilauea.
