Giovanni Malagò to lead Italy’s football federation as commissioner

CONI voted to place FIGC under extraordinary administration after a dispute over Malagò’s eligibility; a new election is due by January 31.

The executive board of Italy’s National Olympic Committee (CONI) unanimously voted to put the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) under extraordinary administration and proposed its current president, Giovanni Malagò, as commissioner. The decision still requires final ratification by CONI’s National Council.

The dispute followed a review that found Malagò was not registered with the federation when he ran in June’s election. The challenge concerned his eligibility, rather than the margin of his victory. Al Jazeera and Reuters reported that the interim administration is expected to keep the federation operating and prepare a new election by January 31. Malagò may run again after resolving his administrative status.

The governance crisis comes after Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, missing the tournament for a third consecutive time. FIGC must also address stadium upgrades and preparations for Euro 2032, leaving the interim leadership with sporting and organizational work during the transition.
