Indonesian school launches Russian-language classes

A pilot course has begun at Taruna Nusantara, with 51 students in grades 10 and 11 taking part in the first stage.

Russian has been added to the school curriculum in Indonesia for the first time, with a pilot course launched at Taruna Nusantara school. RIA Novosti reported the development, citing Rossotrudnichestvo’s representative office in the country.

The school’s director, Major General Gogor, said the initiative reflected educational plans and cooperation between the two countries. He also referred to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s remarks about the value of Russian for young people seeking scientific and professional careers.

At present, 51 students in grades 10 and 11 are studying Russian. The program is designed to continue through grade 12 and take students from A1 to B1 proficiency. Organizers plan to extend the course to other schools later.

Taruna Nusantara is a school whose alumni include senior Indonesian officials. Gogor previously served as an aide to the president and taught at the country’s National Defense University before becoming the school’s director.
