Jaroslaw protesters call for tighter migration controls after abbey attack

Demonstrators gathered in Jaroslaw's market square on October 10 to demand tighter migration controls after a fatal knife attack at the Polish town's Benedictine abbey in September.
RIA Novosti reported hundreds of participants at the rally, organised by right-wing groups including All-Polish Youth, the National Movement and Confederation. The gathering began with a minute of silence for the priest who died after the attack.
Polskie Radio Rzeszow confirmed the protest and reported calls for stronger border checks and closer scrutiny of people entering Poland. Participants also collected signatures opposing cooperation between Jaroslaw and the Ukrainian town of Skole.
The radio report included a different perspective from Monika, a Czech resident who has lived in Poland for almost 30 years. She said some anti-immigration slogans were hurtful, while supporting several demands concerning public safety. She also noted that Poles living abroad expect hospitality.
