Two arrested over Udupi robbery allegedly disguised as electoral survey

Udupi police arrested two men suspected of taking an elderly woman’s gold chain after entering her home under the guise of electoral roll work. Police say the pair posed as survey personnel.
The arrests took place on Saturday, October 10. The Hindu and News Karnataka reported that the men claimed to be involved in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
According to a complaint from the woman’s son, they arrived on Wednesday at about 3:30 p.m. and handed her forms. When she stepped away to speak with him, the men allegedly entered, pushed her down and took a chain valued at around four hundred thousand rupees.
Police identified the suspects as Vadiraj Ganiga, forty-four, and Sachin, thirty. Investigators examined CCTV footage and other evidence. Police reported recovering the chain, an Ola electric scooter and two mobile phones. A magistrate remanded the suspects to fourteen days in judicial custody. Police described debts as a suspected motive, which remains an allegation rather than a court finding.
