Ten-man Southampton hold on for derby victory over Portsmouth

Southampton beat Portsmouth 1-0 in the Championship derby on October 11, playing more than half the match with ten men following Cameron Bragg's dismissal.

James Bree scored the only goal at St Mary's in the 20th minute. Finn Azaz lifted a pass behind Jayden Meghoma, and the advancing right-back guided a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Bragg received a second yellow card in the 44th minute for holding Ebou Adams. Adams had already drawn his first booking after dispossessing him. The dismissal gave Portsmouth an opportunity to increase the pressure before half-time.

Colby Bishop's header was saved by Daniel Peretz, while Ryan Kavuma-McQueen shot narrowly wide. After the break, Adrian Segecic sent low efforts past the goal, and Jack Stephens intercepted Zak Swanson's dangerous cut-back beneath Southampton's crossbar.

Southampton coach Tonda Eckert gradually reduced his attacking presence as the game wore on. Stephens and Keven Schlotterbeck helped protect Peretz's goal, while Portsmouth manager John Mousinho used his substitutes in search of an equaliser.

Eckert credited his players for preserving the lead with a man short. He also accepted responsibility for Bragg's role, explaining that he had asked the midfielder to be brave in possession.

Mousinho said Portsmouth were devastated that their pressure and chances after the red card had not produced a goal. The victory moved Southampton into the top half of the table.

The derby ended a week in which Eckert received a six-week suspended ban and a £28,000 fine over the club's spying on opponents. The ban is suspended until the end of the 2027–28 season, allowing him to remain in the dugout. Southampton were previously expelled from the playoffs in May and docked four points.
